New Designers 2019

Wednesday 24th July 2019 by Natasha Searls-Punter

new designers, interns, internship, designer, interior, embroidery

As the weather hots up, so does the competition as July also marks the start of New Designers at the Business Design Center in Islington. Showcasing the brightest and best this year’s graduates have to offer, we are delighted to say that we have not just one, but two of our former interns showing at this years show!

Charlotte Pearson

”My final major project, Oh Kingdom Come In The Absence of Evil, is a collection based on the idyllic dream-esque, glossed over perception of the American dream. Inspired by the beauty of run down motels and shop fronts, places once loved for the part they played in the people’s stories that passed through them. Artists such as David Hockney and Edward Hopper also provide influence. All of the pieces have defining tactile, and visual, details which calls for the attention of the viewer.”

Lauren Stewart

”To ensure a bright future in British manufacturing it is imperative that we connect the designer with the consumer. Stewart’s designs are ethically conscious, with a commitment to local produce that creates a new appreciation for authentic British craftsmanship enabling Lauren Louise Embroidery to create bespoke denim jackets for individual clientele.”

As you can see they have both gone on to produce tremendous work. Follow the links to find our more about them. Well done ladies!

Cayce Zavaglia: Textile Artist

Wednesday 20th July 2016 by claire

It is hard to believe when first looking at the work of Cayce Zavaglia that it isn’t infact photography or photo realistic paintings but embroidered portraits mostly of family, friends and other artists.

Cayce originated as a painter until 12 years ago. When becoming a mother she wanted to use less toxic materials round her children so she decided to experiment with thread to create similar brush marks that are used in classical oil painting.

The main focus of the portraits were to create a photorealistic look and, by mimicking the way the colour tones are layered with in the painting helped her achieve this.

At an unbelievable average of 8” x10” all her work is hand sewn using cotton and silk thread or crewel embroidery wool. She layers various shades of thread similar to oil painting which also allows for the illusion of depth volume and form within her portraits. Cayce claims that her stitching methodology ‘borders on the obsessive’ but ultimately it lets her achieve the best quality of flesh hair and cloth.

A few years ago Cayce turned over one of her portraits and discovered a new path of work that was less precise than her other works but still clearly translated to another style of painting. By highlighting the reverse of her embroideries which historically and traditionally had been hidden from the viewer started conversation about the difference between our inner and outer selves. This inspired Cayce to display her work in galleries so both sides of the portrait can be seen.

If you would like to see more of Cayce Zavaglia’s work don’t hesitate to check out her website (http://www.caycezavaglia.com) or check out this great video of the artist at work (https://vimeo.com/51107397)

Missoni Art Colour Exhibition at the Fashion and Textiles Museum

Friday 8th July 2016 by claire

One of the most respected designer brands that has been in the creative industry for many years has ventured to London’s greatest Fashion and Textiles Museum to give you an insight into the creative processes of their italian fashion house. Ottavio and Rosita Missoni, the founders of Missoni, have developed their brand into various avenues across design world and we went to check out what Fashion, Interior and Art work the exhibition had to offer.

Missoni Art Colour

The exhibition begins with a traditional art gallery layout where you see many inspiration paintings from abstract artists like Sonia Delaunay and Bella and Gino Severini. It is clear to see the similarities in all the paintings displayed highlighting what elements the couple liked and wanted to develop into their own designs.

Ottavio Missoni chose to create many wall hangings made with knitted patchwork. Many of these are displayed around the exhibition so it is possible to see them both close up and from a distance. Although many colours are used throughout all of the wall hangings it is clear to see that all combinations have been carefully considered.

Wall hangings – Missoni Art Colour

By creating wall hangings with no real structure other than the original construction allowed Ottavio to have a unique way of merging his interest of art and fashion. These wall hangings were the basis and textile research for when he developed his work in a new form to produce fashion collections.

Garment collection – Missoni Art Colour

It is really clear to see the creative process of the designers at Missoni as even the original starting sketches of the iconic patterns are seen. Cabinets are filled with both paper and material samples allowing you to see the all the stages of designing. Some of the early works are displayed near the many samples to let you look close up to see how intricate the construction process of the garments is.

Missoni knitted jumper, iconic ‘Made in Italy’ label – Missoni Art Colour

Missoni is well known for its fashion collections but also a lot of its woven materials have been used in the interior industry. A room is dedicated to many mirrors and carpets all using the Missoni patterns. An exclusive documentary is played in this room which gives you more of an insight to the makings of all avenues of the Missoni brand from the perspective of the Missoni family themselves.
