Inspiration for Embroiderers in Summery London 2014

Monday 28th July 2014 by Natasha Searls-Punter

It would seem that the events and entertainment industries are making a real effort to satisfy the creative communities desire for culture this summer. There seems to be inspiration for embroiderers everywhere with film, tv and exhibitions galore.

As you may have heard us mention before, we adore the embroidery from the most recent series of game of thrones by Michelle Carragher. If you didn’t check it out after our last post, you really should, its a real show stopper. No, really, at some points it is genuinely worth stopping the action to appreciate the embroidery. Not that we’re obsessed or anything remotely similar.

The Yves Saint Laurent film has an abundance of beautiful gowns and people wandering through this movie. A visual delight, with a dramatic storyline and lots of glamorous gowns made even more chic as it is in french with subtitles. If you missed it in the cinemas it will be out on DVD soon I’m sure.

You also may have heard about the John Paul Gaultier exhibition at the Barbican Centre, ‘From sidewalk to catwalk’. Bringing together more than 160 couture and ready to wear pieces spanning fashion, costume and performance from the 1970’s to present day, it looks set to be a thoroughly engaging exhibit.

If you fancy something a little more reserved, there is always the ‘Wedding Dresses 1775-2014’ currently on at the V&A Museum featuring pieces from Charles Frederick Worth, Norman Hartnell, Charles James, John Galliano, Christian Lacroix, Vivienne Westwood and Vera Wang. Fear not, the exhibit is not like walking into a big white marshmallow, there are plenty of non white pieces including a red sari, Gwen Stefani’s Pink dip dyed dress and little Ian Stewart number in blue. Snow storm effect: avoided.

To round it all off in September we have the fashionistas staple, London Fashion Week. For the listing of who and when brand are showing visit the LFW website and keep up to date with the latest picture as they hit the press from style.com.

We are also very excited about the long over due ‘Savage Beauty’ exhibit which will be shown at the V&A Museum. As a London based company we are delighted to have the McQueen exhibition coming home after being shown in New York. I’m afraid this one doesn’t quite make the summer category, there is still a little wait for it as it doesn’t show until March 2015. However if the Metropolitan images are anything to go by, it will be an embroiderers heaven.

And obviously there’s all the exciting classes that we have on at the moment now we are in the very heart of the Summer Season, so come and join us for silk flower making, tambour with feathers, goldwork and more…
